2026-08-31Why Our Self-Drilling Screws Won't Snap
Most self-drilling screws fail in one of two ways: they either can't drill through steel, or they snap halfway through installation.
The culprit? A one-size-fits-all approach to hardness.
Some manufacturers chase extreme surface hardness—HV 800 or higher. That cuts steel beautifully. But the core turns brittle. One torque spike, and the screw snaps clean off. Others soften the entire screw for toughness. Now it bends instead of breaking, but it won't penetrate 3mm steel plate. Either way, you lose. Either way, your customer pays the price with wasted time and damaged materials.

We solve this through selective carburizing—a case hardening process that creates two distinct personalities in one screw.
The surface hardness reaches HV 680 to 750. This keeps the drill tip sharp and the threads wear-resistant, cutting through steel plate cleanly without pre-drilling. Meanwhile, the core hardness stays at HRC 32 to 38, retaining toughness to absorb torsional stress and impact loads. The effective case depth is precisely controlled between 0.10 and 0.23 millimeters—deep enough to resist wear, shallow enough to keep the core flexible. Core impact toughness exceeds 12 joules per square centimeter, allowing the screw to survive vibration and shock even in structural steel applications.
We call this design "hard on the outside, tough on the inside."
The results are measurable. Drills faster—sharp tips cut through 3mm steel in under 8 seconds. Installs reliably—no snapped heads, no stripped threads, no callbacks. And stays locked—surface hardness resists thread wear, maintaining clamp force over time.
An Italian steel frame contractor recently tested 500 pieces on 3mm galvanized C-channel. Zero breakage. They told us they used to waste 5 to 8 percent on snapped bits. Now it's zero. That's pure profit for them—and for you.
When your clients push hard, our screws push back without breaking. You don't just sell fasteners. You sell installation certainty. And that's a premium your customers will pay for.
