What do LEGO bricks and screws have in common? They both rely on "teeth" to hold.

A screw works the same way. Its threads—those spiral-shaped "teeth"—cut into the material, and the flanks press firmly against the wall of the pilot hole. The holding power comes from surface friction, pure and simple.
