On every steel structure or color steel panel job, the fastener that gives the most trouble is often the humble self‑drilling screw. Installers complain about bits snapping, screws spinning without gripping, or joints working loose after a few weeks. Most people blame bad screws. But in reality, it's almost always a length of the drill tail problem – the drill tail doesn't match the plate thickness.

Think about a thick steel plate, say 5 mm or more. If you grab a short drill tail with a stubby drill point, it simply cannot reach through. The tip hits the bottom of the hole, friction jumps, and the screw stalls. Push harder with your gun, and the drill point overheats and cracks, or the entire screw twists off.

Now flip to thin steel, like 1–2 mm sheets. Using a long drill tail here is equally bad. The drill point punches through in a second, but then too much threaded shank sticks out the back.They don't pull the panels tight, so the joint stays loose. On roofing, that gap lets water in.
The fix is dead simple. Before you pick a screw, measure the total steel thickness you're fixing through. Then choose a screw whose effective drilling depth covers that thickness, plus a little extra for thread engagement. For thin sheets up to about 3 mm, a standard short‑tip screw works fine – it cuts clean and locks solid. For plates over 4 mm, step up to a longer drill point with deeper threads. A good rule: the screw's usable thread length should be at least 3–4 mm more than the stack thickness, but not so long that more than two threads poke out the back.
Taking that extra minute to match lengths saves you from snapped screws, rework, leaks, and callbacks. It also speeds up installation because the screws run in smoothly every time. Proper length selection isn't rocket science – it's just basic common sense that every installer should follow. Get it right, and your connections stay tight for years.
